Painful breastfeeding

My baby is now a week old and I've been breastfeeding since she was born. But it's so painful, every time she feeds it makes me cry. My nipples are cracked and bleeding, they crust over and then she feeds again and they become even more painful.

It's got to the stage where I wondering how much longer I can cope, my boyfriend said to go onto formula if it's that painful, but I feel like I've failed if I do that. I'm just hoping someone can give me some good advice so I can keep going and not be in so much pain. Because I know how great the benefits of breastfeeding are and I want that for my little girl.
